1millionspots.com is a website conceived in 2011 by Brandon DeNino, a student from Orlando, Florida, where he is going to donate a portion of the money raised to non profit organizations. The home page consists of a million pixels arranged in a 1000 1000 pixel grid; the image-based links on it are being sold for $1 per pixel in 10 10 blocks. The purchasers of these pixel blocks are provided tiny images to be displayed on them, a URL to which the images are linked, and a slogan to be displayed when hovering a cursor over the link. The aim of the website is to sell all of the pixels in the grid, thus generating a million dollars of income for the creator. Businesses owners are commenting that this is a great way for them to advertise their business, while still being cost effective. It's a plus on both sides, considering that the website is guaranteed to be up for 10 years by the website owner.
With only being up three days, it seems that 1millionspots.com is already beginning to see success with already receiving 500,000 impressions through Facebook & Google in 3 days. The website owner comments, "I just took an already, good existing idea of pixel advertising and putting a twist to it, I plan on donating a portion of the money to non profit organizations, something that most advertising websites don't do. So I'm creating an advertising opportunity for businesses, while also serving a good cause." It will be interesting to see the continuing progress of 1millionspots, and how advertisers will respond.
