Dasaswamedh Ghat, a unique religious site

The Dasaswamedh Ghat is one of the most frequented ghats (series of steps leading towards a body of water) in the holy city of Varanasi. With its importance and central convenient location it is no surprise that it is one of the busiest ghats on the River Ganges. Even during the rainy season when the river fills up to its full capacity pilgrims may be seen arriving at the local temple in boats. There is no doubt that visiting Dasaswamedh Ghat is one of the major pilgrimages in India.

The origins of the site are shrouded in legend; the name Dasaswamedh means literally ten sacrificed horses'. According to Hindu tradition Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses at the location to permit Lord Shiva to come back from a time of exile. It is also noteworthy that the shrine of the greatly venerated Goddess Shitala is to be found in these environs. Goddess Shitala represents the positive aspects of human existence, and also the malefic aspects such as decay and disease. It is believed that the evils of the human condition may be alleviated by worshipping the deity.

Despite the fact that the holy ghat has been in existence for many millennia, it remains clean and unspoilt. Inquisitive travellers visiting the site will be delighted by the colourfully vibrant riverfront vista. Visitors should make it a point to experience the riverfront in the evenings when innumerable earthen lamps are placed in the river waters giving the entire locale a magical ambience. Tourists will also see many Sadhus (religious ascetics) conducting religious rituals here.

A unique aspect is the numerous pilgrim priests, known as pandas or ghatias who sit on their wooden stools in the shade of bamboo umbrellas performing a variety of functions; they recite sankalpa', look after the possessions and clothing of bathers and graciously accept the traditional gifts of pilgrims, along with the customary fee for their services formerly the gift of a cow but today a more affordable few rupees. After the completion of all the rituals these Brahmins will place a bright spot of colour on pilgrims' foreheads.
