Keep The Change by Nirupama Subramanian is a story of a typical Indian Tamilian girl B. Damayanthi who is stuck between the old cultural values and her dreams. This non-fiction story means that it is sometimes required to flow with time and accept change. From this novel I have noted one thing and hence make a bold statement "All Indian Mothers are the same" as they all become so anxious and restless to get their daughters married. I think they start dreaming about it from the very day we girls are born. I hardly see mother encouraging and aspiring their daughters to do or be someone. This is the reason father's are for daughters. This novel reminds me of my days after graduation when everyday a suitable groom snap was placed in front of my eyes. This way or that I rejected more than fifty of them. The reason was not me having an affair but I wanted to live my dreams and know what I am and where I should be. As for girls, before marriage they live with father's identity and after marriage it is their husband. Before accepting the second identity which is going to remain for a lifetime I wanted to see where I stand.I am really happy for the protagonist at least she could come out of the threshold and lead her life.
Although her mother tried to throw bunches of suitable prospective matches for her yet the job in Mumbai at a decrepit firm saved her skin. 'Be good. Don't do anything silly' is what her mother said, which actually meant 'Stay away from sex and alcohol'.
This story is very neatly written according to my picturing the mind set of every Indian girl. The author has really made me feel that if I could have convinced my parents... I could also have held a suitable position by now.
