Treatment hayfever - cyproheptadine drugs, a cure to hay fever

Cyproheptadine drugs, called as cyproheptadine hydrochloride is an antihistaminic, anticholinergic and antiserotonergic agent used to treat and cure allergic reaction, specifically hay fever.

Besides known for treatment hayfever, it is also used as a preventive measure against migraine in children and adolescents. This drug has shown its effectiveness in the treatment of nightmares including nightmares related to post traumatic stress disorder. It has been used in the management of moderate to severe cases of serotonin syndrome and in the disease carcinoid in which serotonin is overproduced by tumor cells. It can relieve SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction and drug-induced hyperhydrosis or excessive sweating. Furthermore it is also used in the treatment of cyclical vomiting syndrome and to stimulate the appetite. It works by inhibiting the release of histamine H1 and relieves allergic symptoms.

Allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as hay fever, is an inflammation of the nasal passages caused by allergic reaction to airborne substances. Two types of types of allergic rhinitis are seasonal AR and perennial AR. Seasonal AR occurs in the spring, summer, and early fall, when airborne plant pollens are at their highest levels. For most people allergy to grass pollen is the only one cause of symptoms. Perennial AR occurs all year and is usually caused by home or workplace airborne pollutants. A person can be affected by one or both types. Symptoms of seasonal AR are worst after being outdoors, while symptoms of perennial AR are worst after spending time indoors.

Allergic rhinitis is a type of immune reaction. Normally, the immune system responds to foreign microorganisms, or particles, like pollen or dust, by producing specific proteins, called antibodies that are capable of binding to identifying molecules, or antigens on the foreign particle. This reaction between antibody and antigen sets off a series of reactions designed to protect the body from infection. Sometimes, this same series of reactions is triggered by harmless, everyday substances. This is the condition known as allergy, and the offending substance is called an allergen.

Diagnosing seasonal AR can be done without a medical specialist. When symptoms appear in spring or summer and disappear with the onset of cold weather, seasonal AR is the main culprit. Other causes of rhinitis, including infection, can usually be determined by a physical examination and a nasal smear, in which a sample of mucus is taken on a swab for examination. Other form of testing includes skin testing and provocation testing. Specific allergens can be identified through allergy skin testing.

The best treatment of the allergens is to completely avoid it, which is often not possible. A cure to hay fever can help prevent an increased sensitization to other allergens. Antihistamines block the histamine receptors on nasal tissue, decreasing the effect of histamine release by mast cells. They may be used after symptoms appear, though they may be even more effective when used preventively, before symptoms appear.
