Major Hoshiar Singh was born on 5th May 1936 in village Sisana, district Rohtak , Haryana. His father was a farmer and his mother was a housewife. He married Dhanno when in was in seventh standard. They had 3 sons.
He served in the Indian Army with honesty and dedication. He retiring as a Brigadier with an impeccable service record. He passed away on 6 December, 1998 due to natural causes. He joined army after doing his schooling and one year of college On 30th June 1963 Hoshiar Singh was commissioned in the Grenadiers Regiment. His first posting was in NEFA. he saw some action in the Rajasthan sector in the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war.
During 1971 indo-pak war, 3rd Grenadiers was given the mission to build a bridgehead across the Basantar River in the Shakargarh Sector 15th - 17th December. The river was well fortified by enemies and covered with deep minefields on both sides. Major Singh was in command of the 'C' Company. His orders were to capture Jarpal. Enemy forces reacted quickly and came up with sharp counter attack. Major Singh went from trenches to trenches motivation his men to fight bravely. It was so effective that company was able to fail the Pakistani attack causing heavy causalities on the Pakistani forces. pakistani defence was shatter due to this. In spite of being seriously injured Major Singh refused to leave the battlefield till the enemy ceasefire.
Major Hoshiar Singh was awarded with the highest wartime gallantry medal, the Param Vir Chakra for his leadership, conspicuous gallantry and indomitable fighting spirit. Which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
