Dental practices are beginning to see the benefits of engaging an experienced designer to develop a unique dental logo or ideogram for them. Gone are the days where all dental logos looked alike and were only differentiated by font type and font color.

Today, dental logos come in various forms - from text to symbols - to help give variety to dental logo designs.

Abstract

An abstract symbol is a totally unique design which can be used in a logo design to represent certain aspects of an organization. For instance, if a dental practice has 4 partners, a unique abstract symbol repeated 3 times could perhaps be used to depict this.

When creating abstract marks for dental related ideograms, one must remember to avoid the use of sharp or pointy images. Also, avoid designs that look like drills or scalpels, for obvious reason. Certain colors - red - are also frowned upon when it comes to dental designs.

Instead, use green, blue and white to represent freshness, serenity and cleanliness respectively.

Pictorial

A pictorial symbol resembles the object it represents. A good example of this is the Starbucks logo whereby the pictorial mark of this logo creation depicts a twin-tailed mermaid. Many dental logos utilize pictorial marks in their design. Most common dental related pictorial illustrations are those which depict healthy teeth and gums, wide smiles or an illustration of a mouth mirror.

You will hardly find pictorial marks depicting dentist drills and other objects that are associated with pain.

Text Logotype

Text logotype or lettermark is the most commonly used design style when it comes to dental ideogram designs. In fact it is quite common in many industries. Take for instance logos from AMD, Intel and ICI. The good thing about this logotype usage is that a viewer can immediately identify the companies those logos represent. Since this method is quite restrictive design wise, designers have to be extra creative in getting additional messages across via this logo style.

Combination

However, many logo designs contain both text logotype as well as and abstract symbols. Again, a good example would be the previous Starbucks logo which had the words Starbucks Coffee surrounding the illustration of the twin-tailed mermaid.

Summary

When designing a dental logo, it is important that you try to relay the right feel. The potential patient needs to feel comfortable and confident in the hands of the dental practitioner. With the help of 'dentist safe' colors and the use of various styles mentioned above, a good dental corporate identity design can achieve that end.
