subject: How To Increase Your Cars Trade- In Value [print this page]

For every car owner, the time will one day come to make a purchase of a new car. A car can be a very expensive investment (although buying used can help you to get the most bang for your buck) so it is helpful to look for any way possible to cut the cost of a new car and to make your new purchase affordable.

For many, this means trading in their own vehicle to the dealer in exchange for getting some money off of their new car purchase. Trading in your car to the dealer is, in effect, selling your old car to the dealer and putting the proceeds of that sale towards the purchase of your new used car.

Of course, this means that the better the car you have to trade in, the more your trade in should be worth and the more money you should get off of your new used car purchase.

While some factors (such as make, model and mileage) cannot be changed on your trade-in, there are certain things that you may be able to do to make the trade-in more attractive and thus worth more.

For example, some of the ways that you can increase your cars trade-in value include:

Make sure your car is clean. This means giving your vehicle a thorough washing (or having it washed) and also cleaning out the inside of the car including your glove compartment and trunk. Youll have to clear out the car eventually, so you might as well do it before you to go the dealer with a car full of junk to try to trade in. A clean car will show better and you will make it clear that youve actually taken care of the vehicle, which is attractive to a dealer you are thinking about effectively selling it to.

Do some small and simple upgrades. For example, you may want to change the air filter, do an oil change if you need one and even add new wiper blades. One of the things that dealers are going to look at when they consider your trade-in is whether youve taken care of the car or not. If these little details are taken care of at the time when you bring the vehicle in, this too can be a clear sign that youve been a responsible car own.

Be honest about minor problems. While this may seem counterintuitive to point out something wrong with a car that you are trying to trade in, the fact is that being honest about problems can earn your credibility and potentially boost your trade in value as a result.

By following these simple tips, you may be able to help increase the value of your trade in. Remember, when you are getting ready to take the care in and negotiate with the dealer, you should think about the types of things that will be important to a dealer in buying a car that will be resold and you should try to make decisions on fixing up and presenting your car accordingly.
