The Republic of Maldives, simply known as Maldives is a beautiful tourist destination. Maldives is an island nation, which automatically implies several beaches. The idyllic beaches are sure to enchant you. Although it is officially the smallest country in Asia, it is a major draw for tourists from all over the world. The Maldives Tourism department contributes 28% of the Gross Domestic Product of the nation.

The tourists from other countries can reach Maldives by flight. The Mal International Airport is the point of entry for the tourists. This airport is located on the Hulhul Island. Mal is a beautiful city with many places to visit and enjoy. The official religion of the country is Islam and no other religion is tolerated in the citizens. So all the places you visit will have some relation to the religion. It is impossible to find places of worship for Christians or Hindus or any other religion. Being Muslim is a pre-requisite to become a citizen of Maldives.

The Friday Mosque or the Hukuru Miskiiy is one of the ancient mosques. It was constructed in the year 1656. This is a place worth visiting. However, only Muslims are allowed unless you have special permission. The entry is free.

The Independence Square, also known as the Jumhooree Maidhan is at the centre of the city. This is a small park, which features a huge Maldivian flag. It is a very important part of any political demonstration. So it is heavily guarded.

The Islamic centre is the champion of Maldivian architecture. It is the largest mosque in Maldives. It is crowned with a golden dome. It can hold up to 5000 people at a time. Tourists are allowed inside at all times except for the prayer times. Photographing the inside of the Islamic centre is not allowed.

The National Museum and the Sultan Park are another major tourist attraction in Maldives. The building, which once housed the Sultan, has now been converted into a museum by the government of Maldives. The entry to the park is free. However, you need to pay $3 to enter the museum.

Another interesting activity for tourists in Male is the Submarine ride. It is a trip of half an hour to forty-five minutes. You will get a chance to see the beautiful marine life off the coast of the city. If you are lucky, you might even see some whales.

Mal is one of the topmost destinations in any Maldives tourism program. It is definitely a place worth visiting.
