subject: Tips To Install Resilient Bars [print this page] Resilient bars are thin metal channels designed to improve the sound insulation of plasterboard walls and ceilings by isolating the plasterboard from the studwork or joists, and by dispersing the sound waves which would have otherwise been transmitted through the frame.
While resilient bars are pretty easy to install, it is necessary that they are mounted correctly else these will not be effective. Following are the tips to help you install the resilient bars.
1. After inserting suitable insulation between the joists or the studwork, cut the resilient bars to size using tinsnips or a hacksaw. Either is good.
2. Thereafter, fix the resilient bars to the studwork using drywall or self-drilling screws. If you are using resilient bars with single-boarded walls, they will need to be installed at 400mm centres horizontally from floor to ceiling, with the narrow flange at the bottom, with the exception of the top bar which is fixed upside down with the narrow flange at the top. If you are mounting resilient bars to double-boarded walls, you will need to ensure that this space is increased to 600mm. For ceilings, resilient bars should be spaced at 400mm to 450 mm centres and placed across the joists and around the room.
3. As the third step, mark the position of the resilient bars on the adjoining walls.
4. To get the best results, it is recommended that you use a double layer of high-density acoustic plasterboard at least 12.5mm thick. Fix the first layer of plasterboard to the resilient bars using drywall or self-drilling screws again. Just as a word of caution, you must make sure you do not fix it to the studwork.
5. Position the second layer on top, ensuring that the joints between the two layers overlap, and fix to the resilient bars with more drywall or self-drilling screws. There again, ensure that you are clear of the studwork.
6. Around door openings, you will also need to install resilient bar noggins in order to fix the plasterboard at the required centres.
7. To check that you have installed the resilient bars properly, press gently on the wall or ceiling. You should feel the surface flex slightly.
8. After securing the double layer of plasterboard, apply some acoustic sealant in the gaps around the perimeter of the wall, and smooth it. This is an important step in ensuring good sound insulation so dont rush it!
Resilient bars will be effective even if mounted only on one side of the wall provided you follow these instructions, but you will, of course, obtain a higher level of soundproofing if both sides of the wall are equipped with resilient bars.
