subject: Money Saving Tips On Saving Fuel [print this page]

Small and simple tips help improve the efficiency of your car and hence provide a smoother drive. Little care taken regularly will eventually help in longer run of the car.

Just like anything else, machines also require regular maintenance to stay safe and functional in their operations. Car maintenance is a necessary exercise that needs to be conducted on a regular basis to justify the increased use of motorized vehicles and to ensure maximum fuel efficiency.

Fuel for the vehicle is becoming expensive these days. Hence, it is the right time to think about the fuel economy of cars. Here are some tips for saving fuel and consequently saving tons of money -

Here is a checklist of few things that need to be checked on a regular basis to maintain the efficiency levels of performance for your vehicle -

Keep a Check on your Tires-

Check your tire pressures repeatedly, ideally once a week. Improper tire pressures can affect fuel cutback, handling and comfort. Make sure that tire pressures are maintained as per manufacturer specifications. Under or over inflated tires have more rolling struggle, which can lead to higher consumption of petrol.

Check your Fuel -

As specific gravity of fuel is high in the morning, try to fill gas at this time of the day. Avoid a completely filled up fuel tank. Keep some space, so that a proper pressure is maintained. Also this will guarantee that the fuel pipes are always dust free and are blockage free by the deposits of slow flowing fuel. The Fuel tank also will not hold corrosion.

Usage of Air-conditioner-

Use air-conditioner wisely as it puts extra load on the engine asking more fuel. Use the cars flow through ventilation, once the car has cooled, turn off air conditioner and open window. This is a heat Exchanger expansion tool, when used wisely increases the life of the car eventually.

Service the Car

Get your car serviced at intervals as specified by the owners instruction manual from authorized service centers to make sure that your car is in correct balance all the time.

Checking the Oil Levels

Change the air filter at regular intervals. A polluted air filter restricts the air flow into the engine, which affects performance and cost-cutting measure. Similarly, change the oil in your car occasionally. If the oil is too high or too low, it can cause difficulty for your engine.

Driving Skills

Drive smoothly and avoid sudden brakes or acceleration, not only does this save, but it also extend the life of the tires. Avoid clutch riding as it acts as hindrance for car engines life which in turn increases fuel consumption.

Avoid Overloading Cars

Avoid overloading the vehicle with unnecessary things. Extra weight means the extra load on the engine and the engine has to work harder and hence uses more fuel to get up to velocity. Turn off your car if you need to stop for more than 3 minutes.

Check the Coolant Level

The coolant is another thing that the engine cannot go without. Every engine is different. When you check your handbook you should find where the coolant reservoir is. It is usually bolted to one side of the engine bay or the other, and can be a white semi-transparent bottle. Wait till your engine is cool and take a look at it.

Taking basic maintenance steps not only keeps your car run efficiently on roads but also saves money and extends the life of the car.
