What is stress?

The word stress is actually a word that describes our mental physiological state under certain events. It is there to make us take an action about something and most likely it was developed through thousand years of evolution when people had to fight or flight when in dangerous situations. When in danger people would get a mental and physiological response with a pump of adrenaline to either fight the danger or run away from it. Nowadays we do not face that many physical dangers but we face more psychological dangers such as failing an exam, breaking up with someone etc. Our body still gives us the same reaction and prepares us to do something about the event.

Stress on its own it is not the problem it is what you do with this state. You can use this state to your advantage as most performers do. They see it as a physical high preparing them for the performance. You can use it as a sign that there is something that you need to act on.

What to do?

Ask yourself

Is it a life or death situation and do I need to act now?

If it is then act immediately. Run away from the situation or fight/resolve the situation.

Can it wait?

Most likely it can wait so take a deep breath and hold it and count down from 5. So if it can wait then accept the fact that it can wait and check your priorities for the time being, act according to the priorities and when you get to the event that stressed you look for ways to resolve it.

First of all in order to combat stress you have to understand what are you stressed about.

People often tell me I am stressed because of work. That is a perfect answer but they are still not telling me what they are stressed about specifically. Many people are stressed because they don't have work so it is not the work as such that makes them stressed.

So what are you stressed about specifically?

You might just say exams however exams are nothing to be stressed about, it is just a formality to assess if you understand what they have been teaching you all this time. So what specifically about the exams do you find stressful?

Is it that you

Haven't prepared and you think that you might fail?

Have prepared but worried that you might not get top marks

You will be in a room full of people which makes you uncomfortable

So what is it exactly that makes you stressed? When you identify what you are stressed about then you can take the right action to resolve the problem. For example if you are stressed because you have to go to a party far away where you expect to drink a lot and suffer from a hangover on the exam day or maybe not even get back to university on time then the advice for you to revise more before the exam day will be a bit pointless. Don't you think?

Identify the reason you are stressed and then take appropriate action.
