subject: Cdma Technology [print this page] Cell phone users around the world are frequently subscribing to wireless services and are using their phones more habitually. As a result of the increased use they thus demand more from wireless communication technologies than before. Additional features of 3G wireless data services and applications - such as wireless email, web, digital picture taking/sending and assisted-GPS position location have become very famous among the masses for some of the past years.
This is the point where CDMA technology jumps in. The term CDMA, is actually a short form for Code-Division Multiple Access. It uses spread-spectrum technique. CDMA technology relentlessly provides better capacity for voice and data connections than other commercially available mobile technologies. Thus this technology allows more subscribers to connect at any said time, and it is the widespread podium on which 3G technologies are built. CDMA does not allocate a specific frequency to each user which is contrary to GSM technology. Instead, every channel uses the fully available spectrum. In CDMA individual conversations are programmed with a pseudo-random digital string. Moreover CDMA systems have the unique ability to be operated in both the 800-MHz and 1900-MHz frequency bands.
CDMA is basically an army-based technology which was first used during the World War II by English allies to bring to a standstill to the German attempts at blocking transmissions. To do so, the allies decided to transmit their classified data over quite a lot of frequencies, as an alternative of one, making it tricky for the German army men to pick up the entire signal.
The advantages and disadvantages of CDMA technology as compared to other wireless service technologies are given below.
Advantages:
1.A mobile phone that uses a CDMA technology is usually more affordable in price than the one that uses a GSM technology.
2.The quality of a call made from a CDMA mobile phone is better than that of the GSM one.
3.CDMA handsets are good to use because for the recent years they have been a more reasonable hit in the urban market as compared to GSM phones because they also offer more economical services.
4.Other advantages of CDMA technology are increased voice aptitude, extended battery life, higher data throughput, data transmitting variety and synchronization.
Disadvantages:
Apart from advantages there are some major disadvantages in CDMA mobile handsets.
1.A CDMA mobile phone cannot be used with a SIM card, which means there is limited availability of a variety of handsets for customers in CDMA as compared to that in GSM.
2.A mobile phone with CDMA technology does not offer international roaming to a customer. A GSM phone has this advantage because it does offer international roaming.
3.The major disadvantage for any CDMA handset is its non-compatibility with GSM handsets.
4.Another disadvantage is that CDMA has only two service providers to its list and consumers are left with no other option in case if they want to decrease their service level.
5.The web based services like messenger, downloading ringtones etc from various websites can not be availed on CDMA services.
