Login your Gmail account.

Make a click on the Settings options available and then click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

Then you have to select Enable POP for all mails (even mails that have already been downloaded).

Click Save changes. From now onwards you can download your emails and get access to the mails.

It is very important to know that you cant backup your mails from Spam & Trash folder until they are not tunneled to your inbox.

Most of the people are still have a question that what happen to the message when they get it downloaded on their hard drive? It depends on your choice whether you want to keep that mail on webmail storage or want to delete them. There is an option present in the Settings under Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab to delete or mark as read or archive Gmails copy when the mails are downloaded to your desktop from the server. When you delete those mails from your account then they are stored in Trash folder and after 30 days they are permanently deleted.

IMAP: IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol is prevalent than POP and used more frequently for downloading mails on your desktop. IMAP offers two way synchronization means the changes which you do in your mail client on your desktop reflected in your webmail account. The procedure for activating this service is almost same as activating POP. But IMAP is better in terms of extent of reach in your webmail account. Now you can download messages even from your Gmails draft, Sent mail and spam folders. Labels and message headers are not copied while using POP where as in case of IMAP your labels appear as folders making it easy to organize.
