About the festival
Established by the Sydney Committee, the New South Wales State Government and the city leaders, the festival was designed with a view of attracting people into the city centre during the summer holiday month of January.
For a period of three weeks, the festival showcases more than 330 performances and 100 events involving 1000 artists from all around the world. The program is highly diversified and can include anything from burlesque circus to New York rap to Russian theatre, as well as contemporary dance, family programs and traditional Indigenous arts practice.
The events take place throughout the entire city. Venues such as the Carriage Works, City Recital Hall and the Opera House are all utilised, many of which are within easy access of the best Sydney hotels. But be warned; hotels tend to fill up quickly so those interested in attending should definitely book ahead.
Free Concerts
Tickets to all events cost $35 if purchased in advance or $25 the day of the event, whether it is for music, visual art, theatre or musical theatre. However, to make the festival even more desirable, every Saturday free concerts are held in The Domain or Parramatta, both of which are easily accessible from most of the best Sydney hotels. Music from all over the world is featured during these wonderful free concerts. Once the concerts are over, attendees can head over to Hyde Park and the Festival bar where bands and DJs play late into the evening.
