subject: Sampling The Cuisine Of Amsterdam [print this page]

Cuisine is usually a hot topic when talking about a holiday to a foreign country. If you're heading to Holland on a short break, there are plenty of delicious traditional foods to tempt you. The bustling capital of Holland is a popular destination for a quick city break as there is a lot to see and do here if you book a stay in a city hotel. Amsterdam boasts a huge range of culinary treats, so make sure you try a few of the following.

Raw Herring

Although it doesn't sound so appetising, this is one thing you really should try while staying in your city hotel. Amsterdam is a great place to try this Dutch delicacy and you will find it served up all over the city.

The best place to look for raw herring is at the street stalls found everywhere which serve up a variety of fish dishes. The herring is usually served with gherkins and raw onions, and you eat it by holding it up by the tail and biting into it. However, you may also be able to find it served up in a bun.

If you are especially fond of seafood then you may want to try out some of the other fish dishes traditionally served in the city. Kibbeling is one and consists of deep-fried cod. Another popular dish is gerookte paling, which is smoked eel. Be brave and you will be rewarded!

Cheeses

The Dutch are famous for their cheeses, and you wont find yourself wanting when you book a stay here in a city hotel. Amsterdam, like the rest of Holland, boasts a fondness of cheese and you will be able to sample genuine Edam, Gouda and a healthy supply of various other varieties. Look out for a kaasbroodje, which is cheese served up with a bread roll. This is a wonderfully hearty way to start out before a hard day of sightseeing.

Snacks

French fries are the most popular snack in Amsterdam, and there probably isn't a caf, restaurant or street stall you can't grab some while you're out and about. They are typically served up with fritessaus, a sauce similar to mayonnaise. However, they are also served with ketchup, relish, peanut sauce and a range of other types of sauces.

Another popular snack to keep you going during the day is a frikandel (a deep-fried sausage) and a kroket (a fried meat roll in breadcrumbs).

Sweet Dishes

There are plenty of sweet dishes to tempt you in the Dutch capital too. Dutch pancakes, called pannekoeken, are found all over the place, as are stroopwafels, a type of very sweet and tasty waffle. Also look out for the popular liquorice sweets that you can find in shops all over the city.

Give Your Tastebuds a Treat

If you are booking a stay in a city hotel, Amsterdam is an excellent destination for people who love to experiment with different types of food. Make sure you try as many new things as you can during your stay your tastebuds will thank you.
