subject: Structures And Types Of Bearings [print this page]

Bearing is a machine or device used to bear (i.e. to support) another device. It is a device that constrains relative motion between moving parts to only the desired motion. It is used to enable linear and rotational movement, while reducing friction and handling stress.

Bearings are used in various applications such as cryogenics engines, acidic environment, high speeds and high temperature. The main purpose of bearing is that they avoid the direct contact between the outer and the inner surfaces and thus reducing the friction as well. Civil engineering consists of various bearing structures and walls and roof. Dynamic characteristics of all roads are the dynamic characteristics of the bearing structure. Walls are also considered in the bearing structure. In order to serve all functions of bearing, it makes use of relatively simpler structure like a ball with internal and external smooth metal surfaces to aid rolling.

There are different kinds of bearings depends on the load type and the ability to handle weight such as follows:

Roller Bearing: Cylindrical roller bearing is designed in such a way to carry heavy loads. It is used to prevent or minimize rubbing. The life of roller bearing depends on the lubrications and often on the maintenance. It can handle primarily heavy loads and used for higher moment loads in comparison to plain bearings.

Needle Roller Bearing: This type of bearing is same as roller bearing but it has smaller diameter and the length is much greater than the diameter. The friction quality is depend on the materials used and feature high load capacity and rigidity compared to the space taken by the bearing. This type of bearing gives the benefits to make mechanical equipments smaller with lighter in weight.

Fluid Bearing: Fluid bearing has zero friction at low speed and requires negligible maintenance. It can also handle very large loads.

Specialized Bearings: Specialized bearings are magnetic bearings and giant roller bearing. They are designed and manufactured for some specific applications such as buildings and large structural components. They have the ability to support the devices that move unconscionably fast.

Ball and Roller Thrust Bearing: Ball and Roller thrust bearings both are used to handle thrust loads. The difference between ball and roller thrust bearing is that ball thrust bearing handle low weight in comparison to roller thrust bearing. Bar tools and gear support are some application of ball and roller thrust bearing respectively.

Many other types of bearing are also available like large bearing, tapered roller bearing, flexure bearing and jewel bearing etc. To improve the performance of the bearing special materials like lubricants and other accessories are used. Extensive testing activities are also carried out in the laboratory and in addition PRS-Neoweb increased the load bearing capacity of the soil by a factor of 5 and also reduced differential settlement by up to 80%.
