subject: 3 Simple Tips To Make Your Lawn Survive The Cold Winter [print this page]

Everyone yearns to have a beautiful lush green grass on his or her property. However, during the cold, winter seasons, it is quite challenging for the lawn owner to keep his or her lawn green and beautiful. Nevertheless, to avoid your lawn to turn dull and dry, following the below mentioned tips will help you to make your lawn survive the cold winter.

Fertilize Your Lawn

Fertilizing your lawn, especially during the beginning of autumn is the best way to prepare it for the cold season. Fertilizing will improve the lawns sustenance level, which helps it to keep healthy and green for the cold winter days. Besides, during the winter season, grass turfs are more susceptible to weeds and other grass diseases. Thus, fertilizing your lawn adequately before winter will also help your lawn fight against fungi, weeds, and other diseases. If you have turf such as Sir Walter lawn, it is recommended to use Sir Walter Fertilizer, which is high in quality slow-release granular lawn food. If you are having a lawn lain over an area of 400 or 500 square meters, then 10 Kg of Sir Walter Fertilizer would suffice for your winter fertilizing needs.

Water Your Lawn

The amount of water you give to your lawn is very crucial, especially if you want the lawn to thrive in the winter season. Usually, during the hot summer or when the lawn is newly installed, frequent watering is required. However, this is not the case during the winter season. During the winter, water your lawns as little as once in a week, but make sure to do it thoroughly. This is because, during the cold season, the rate of evaporation is very low. Hence, the water will be retaining in the soil for several days. If you have Sir Walter lawn, watering it fortnightly will also do.

Mow Your Lawn

Mowing height matters the most for any kind of grass turf. The main reason behind mowing the lawn is to increase the moisture retaining capacity of the grass. During the hot season, grass is kept little longer so that the moisture can retain for longer time under its shade. However, during the winter, the scenario is completely different, where you do not have to worry about moisture retention in the soil. Thus, if you have grass turf like kikuyu, you must mow it every 2-5 weeks at the height of 30-40mm. As for the Sir Walter grass, it will be best enjoyed at 40-50mm in the cooler months.

The above tips are simple enough, and if followed accordingly, your lawn will surely be able to survive the winter to stay healthy and green.
