subject: Goa Spice Plantations Where Nature Meets Science [print this page]

While many people may know about the beaches of Goa, few are aware of the state's vast spice plantations. Among the spices grown in India's smallest state is cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, black pepper, coriander, chilli, cashew, cloves, cardamom and betel nut palm. Many of these spice plantations are found in the rural regions and are quite interesting to visit. While the plantations themselves maybe located in the less developed areas, they are actually well run, sophisticated operations that stand in stark contrast to their rural settings. Combining traditional farming practices with modern technology, the spice plantations are the perfect spot for a short excursion when visiting Goa.

The Sahakari Farm located at Curti is a very popular tourist attraction. Set on 4.5 hectares of once barren land, the farm is a testament to the miracles that science and technology can wrought. In addition to growing a variety of spices the Sahakari Farm also grows fruit trees and is a one stop information centre on the spice business. Other popular spots include the Savoi Plantation and the Tropical Spice Plantation.

Goa is the smallest Indian state in terms of land area and is one of the smallest in terms of population. It is located on the country's western coast and faces the alluring Arabian Sea. The first Portuguese merchants landed here during the early sixteenth century and eventually took over. Goa remained a Portuguese colony for almost half a millennia and the foreign influence is evident in everything from architecture to cuisine. Goa is known for its exceptional beauty and is a highly popular tourist destination within the country.

Travellers visiting the state and are on the lookout for a good beach resort in Goa can try the Alila Diwa Goa. The Goa resort is located by the famed Majorda Beach which is just a short twenty minute drive from the airport. The resort's convenient location is very helpful as getting around is not very easy. While there are plenty of buses and taxis most tourists may find it more convenient to rent a scooter, the friendly locals will gladly supply directions.
