Over the last 50 years in the United States, we have been training people to get a job with a pension and benefits with retirement at 65, a safe proposition. Something happened that changed the deal its called the internet. The explosion of the internet 15 years ago has started a wave of change, one of those changes is huge unemployment, let me explain.
In the 1800s the corporate structure gained dominance over smaller entrepreneurship, by collectively joining together people who could gain by that association giving them the ability to compete better in the market place. The internet has changed that dramatically. The shift has moved back to the entrepreneur in a huge way leaving people in a system they have been trained for that offers ever higher levels of unemployment.
Unemployment-The Internet Has Changed The Rules
In the 1970s those coming out of college lined up to work for Citibank who had the largest computer in the world giving anyone employed there an obvious advantage in the market place. Today I have computer equipment in my home as sophisticated and more up to date. Citi today updates their computers about every 6 years, while Im utilizing iMac technology on the iCloud. Today I market out of my home a variety of products and services that 15 years ago could only be found in retail locations. I have minimal overhead compared to large corporations who have huge overhead and costs, pensions, medical benefits to name a few. To become more efficient to compete with the entrepreneur, companies continue to layoff employees on an annual basis creating a growing number of unemployment.
On an annual basis, the available job pool in the corporate world is shrinking by 3-5% every year. At the same time we are continuing in the US to train people to work in this system creating a declining job pool, with more people being trained to fill jobs that are disappearing creating huge unemployment. So why are we continuing to train people for jobs that wont exist? Today the unemployment rate is running around 7.8%, but if we calculate that number in a real sense the number is closer to 15%. How you ask? We dont count someone as unemployed if they havent looked for a job during the last 30 days. Tell that to those who cant find a job in their field who are unemployed by the true definition.
Unemployment-Where Do You Go From Here
The way we have made money over the last 50 years is gone, no more get an education get a good job with a good company with a pension and benefits and live the good life. How many people do you know who bought into that promise and have had the rug pulled out from under them in their 50s and 60s? Dont let this be you we all need to be re-trained into the new information age economy. The advantage is now in the hands of the entrepreneur. I know, some of you just felt this twinge of fear run through you, but what are you afraid of. Remember when you learned to ride a bike, or roller skate or drive a car? Being retrained to be an entrepreneur is no different, your only afraid of what you dont know.
Over the last 32 years we have been training people to be entrepreneurs, todays economy is a perfect environment for that transition. The unemployment rate for entrepreneurs is 0%, you are the boss you set your hours and how much time you will work or vacation. You also set your pay and who you will work with. The benefits of entrepreneurship far outweigh the traditional corporate job by leaps and bounds.
We have trained hundreds of people over the years to run successful home businesses and generate incomes far exceeding traditional jobs. There is a definition of insanity that fits perfectly to this discussion, doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. There are more opportunities to start a home business today then ever before, leveraging the power of the internet for you and your family. Yes you will need to learn a new skill set and improve your self. Find a mentor who is willing to train and you can learn from the mistakes they have already made saving you a lot of time. The longer you wait to retrain for the new economy, the more financial pressure you and your family will be under and the odds of becoming a statistic on the unemployment rate will increase dramatically.
