subject: Area Rugs: Both Useful And Beautiful [print this page]

Area rugs are a staple accessory in many homes. Coming in countless styles and patterns and priced for every budget, these can be useful for multiple purposes. They can be used to warm up a room, increase the luxurious feeling of any room, cover damage or imperfections in existing flooring and finally, help with keeping the floor clean.

Warm up any room

Many homes today have hardwood or stone flooring in most, if not all, of their rooms. While these types of flooring are attractive and modern, they can also make a room feel cold and uninviting. In winter, rooms without carpet can also be harder to heat as well. In order to warm up a room, both in the physical sense and in terms of its atmosphere, area rugs can help greatly.

Their size and number also serve as great considerations when they are used for this purpose. Larger rooms will benefit from proportionately larger area rugs while smaller rooms need smaller ones. For the larger room, you may need more than one of these to cover an appropriate amount of floor to achieve the effect you want. To ensure that you have chosen an appropriate size as well as the number of area rugs that you need, be sure to measure the room into which they will go prior to purchasing.

Make a room look more luxurious

The right area rug can spruce up an otherwise dull room with color and a sense of luxury. Most particularly, throwing it over a carpet can impart a layered effect, which creates a sense of luxury in any room. Traditionally, the most luxurious area rugs tend to be of the Persian type or the Oriental type. These lavish items with their heavy tassels, unique designs and vivid coloring, increase the sophistication of any room instantly.

Cover damage or imperfections

Deep scratches on wooden floors or pet stains on carpets are difficult to remove. Sometimes, they simply cannot be removed. No matter how hard you try, they just won't come out. In such cases, an area rug thrown over the affected area will cover up the damage and no one will be aware of its presence. This strategy works with floor imperfections as well.

Keep the floor clean

Area rugs can also be used as floor runners thrown over the areas of your floors that receive the most traffic. For example, you can throw one over the section of the floor that runs from the back door to the hallway, or down the hallway itself. Dirt from shoes then ends up on the rug and not on the floor, which makes for easy cleaning.

Area rugs can be both beautiful and utilitarian. They often serve in both capacities at the same time. Whether they are used to warm up an otherwise cold room or to cover up the dents caused by moving the new refrigerator over your Pergo flooring, they make any room more attractive.
