subject: Three Important Reasons To Do Post Natal Exercises [print this page]

With a baby to tend for and after having been sort of inactive for more than half a year, doing post natal exercises might be the last thing in a womans mind. Taking care of the baby demands a lot of a mothers time and just being with the bundle of joy would take away any thoughts of sweating it out. The weight gained during pregnancy can also be a hindrance as movements become heavy and sluggish.

With this way of thinking, it is not unusual to see a lot of women failing to regain their pre-pregnancy figures. Worse, this becomes the start of complaints of various aches and pains. Perhaps the most serious condition that may result is stress incontinence and the possibility of prolapse of the uterus in later life.

These two conditions have been responsible for causing so much misery to millions of women who have been diagnosed as suffering from stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) complicated by advancing age and childbirth. While there are devices such as the transvaginal mesh that are supposed to treat these conditions, recent events might have shown the contrary. These women have been complaining of serious side effects and complications which have led to the filing of transvaginal mesh lawsuits against a number of manufacturers.

So the first important reason to do post natal exercises is to prevent the occurrence of SUI and POP. This may be prevented by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles that have been stressed and weakened due to the weight of the baby. It should be noted that weak pelvic muscles have been responsible for incontinence and prolapse of organs. Exercises like Kegels can be very effective for these conditions and which may eliminate the need for a costly and risky surgical procedures.

The second reason why exercises should be undertaken after child birth is to regain the abdominal muscles of the pre-pregnancy days. During pregnancy, these abdominal muscles were separated to allow the stomach to expand to accommodate the baby. Failure to address this concern immediately may mean a harder work in the future in what can be a battle of the bulge.

The third reason why post natal exercises are very important is in the correction of the womans posture. A woman during her pregnancy may alter her posture due to the stress on various joints and the change in the center of gravity. Failure to correct this may lead to unnecessary risks or conditions in the years to come like chronic back pains and other muscle or joint disorders.

Clearly, post natal exercises are very vital for any woman who desires to regain her old self and to prevent occurrences of conditions which may be aggravated by pregnancy and child birth. On top of that, exercising helps keep one healthy and may be a big booster to any womans self esteem.
