Exclusive defines the Taj Falaknuma PalaceExclusive defines the Taj Falaknuma Palace. But this former residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad, lovingly restored to its former glory over 10 years, is a sight to behold, and if your pockets are deep enough, its well worth a visit. A standard room at the hotel compares in cost with that of the top hotels in the major capitals, and then of course you could choose the Grand Presidential Suite, once his Highness' Private Chambers, with a price so astronomical that you definitely cant afford it if you have to ask what it costs. But for a taste of this magnificent place, you can also drop in for a meal or high tea. You must reserve in advance, expect a minimum per person of 1500rs and adhere to the dress code forbidding open sandals and shorts. If thats ok, then the money will be well spent.

The visit begins with a trip up the long, winding road to the 2000-foot summit overlooking Hyderabad, which if you are an overnight guest will be taken in a carriage drawn by two white or two black horses (but you can climb the hill in a taxi or even an auto rickshaw). The journey takes you to the stunning white palace complex and then through the main building via garden courtyards to the restaurants, which open to outside guests all year round. Only in season, September through March, may those not staying overnight can enjoy high tea.

For dining, choose between Celeste, the Italian option, with a full range of pastas and other fare, including pizzas, along with some oriental choices, and Adaa, with a varied menu of Indian cuisines, and a year-round favourite haunt among the well-heeled Hyderabadis. In either, a 3-course meal with non-alcoholic drinks will typically come to 2500rs, more with alcohol, which is about what youd pay for a good meal in a top class hotel in most urban capitals. With impeccable service, both venues feature luxurious table settings in twin high-ceilinged, halls flanked by 8 massive white pillars. Tea with a selection of cakes on a little tower of platters is served on the marbled terrace, which has a stunning view of Hyderabad.
