subject: Tracking Assets Is Very Important [print this page]

All assets should be tracked and monitored. This is for both small and large companies. However, it is known that personal assets are simpler than hard ones to track. This is because personal assets are usually low in numbers and can be the possession of just one owner. But, how does this compare to the average company?A company can have tons of employees working for them. There can be a lot of company assets. The company pays for these things, but everyone who works at the company has access to them and can use them.It would be very easy for these things to get lost or stolen if they were not monitored regularly.

Look at things this way.If you owned one hundred computers that were used by other people, wouldnt you be interested in knowing where they were everyday?

If you had 100 computers and let others used them, do you think that you would want to know where they were on a regular basis?Wouldnt you be interested in knowing when they were purchased and how much service life each of them had?Assets are much easier to track when they are your own.You most likely will only have around three or four computers tops. They are the ones that are in your home.Members of your family have them.

But this is not the case with a large company.Employees need assets to carry out their job responsibilities. An accounting clerk cannot pay bills without the aid of a computer and printer.A customer service rep also needs a computer in order to help customers and keep them satisfied. This means that employees will use company assets in order to do their job. There are a lot of assets and employees. How are the computers assigned to employees?Computers have serial numbers and different types of software packages based upon the department or job qualifications. The company should monitor these assets if they want to continer ownership.People are always stealing or losing laptops.

Management may point fingers and say that employees are stealing company assets, but if they are not tracked properly, this might be unfounded. The assets could just be mismanaged and easy to misplace because no one is entering asset information into a good fixed asset software package. This type of program will add assets to the system and track them over the service life of the asset.Certain assets systems can actually say when a product needs servicing. For instance, this is a good thing for a company to have if they have a large fleet of trucks or car. These assets will not remain useful if they are not properly maintained. The only way to do this is to make sure that your company gets a program that has features that will allow you to monitor your assets in an efficient manner.
