subject: Helping Your Child Transition Into High School [print this page] Entering high school is an extremely monumental time in a teen's life. This moment represents when they go from being considered children, to finally becoming young adults. Although this is an important event that causes feelings of excitement, it can also be scary time for some.
That's because going into high school can be an intimidating experience. This is mainly due to the fact that many new students really don't know what to expect. All they basically know is what people have told them, and the things they've seen on television. Thankfully, there are several things you can do as a parent to help prepare your child for their first day.
One of the things you can do is sit down and talk with your kids and try to get them to open up about their fears and hesitations. In some cases, it may be hard for you to get your teen to open up to you in this manner. However, if you show a genuine concern, it may cause them to want to open up more.
Another thing you can do besides talking to them about their fears is be truthful, open and honest about your own high school experiences and the hesitations you may have had on your first day. You may even want to talk to them about some of your struggles and how you overcame them, such as the time you might have been bullied, or struggled to maintain your grades in a class. This may seem like it won't really make much of a difference or that it doesn't really relate to them. However, it would greatly benefit them to see that that it's okay to make mistakes, as long as they work to overcome them. One of the fears many teens suffer from is that they won't be able to live up to their parents' expectations. So, when you allow them to see that even you weren't perfect, it will take a lot of pressure off of their shoulders.
Lastly, a way to help your child on their first day is to make sure they have everything they need. This may seem simple, but you'd be surprised to know how many parents fail in this department. So, make sure they have the proper uniforms as well as supplies. By having those items, it will make their first day go much smoother.
It's important that parents do everything they can to make sure their teenagers are as prepared as possible for their first day of high school. This will go a long way in helping them get over any hesitations and fears they may have.
