subject: The Rest Is Silence - Why You May Need A Hearing Test [print this page]

Are you aware of words that come out of the mouths of your friends, but you don't exactly know what they're trying to tell you? Are you annoying your spouse because you turn the volume of the television higher than normal? If these scenarios are hitting close to home for you, then there's a good chance you may be in need of a hearing test from a professional.

Auditory loss impacts millions of people across the globe. As we increase in age, our senses are not as strong as they were in our younger years. The environments we put ourselves in day-to-day can also hamper our listening abilities. For example, if you work at a job that features frequent loud noises, or you spend your free time going to loud concerts, there's a good chance you're risking long-term audio loss.

It's natural to feel some hesitation in getting a hearing test. It's hard to acknowledge that our bodies are breaking down in any aspect, but acceptance is the first step. Evaluate your life and ask yourself some hard questions about your social situation. Do you think that people around you speak faster than you'd like? Is it impossible to hold a conversation with a person when there is loud music or another source of noise in a room? Is using a cell phone difficult for you, because you can never understand the person on the other line under any circumstance? If your day-to-day life is getting hampered because you can't understand anybody, you should grab the bull by the horns and confront your problem. Resisting help will only make the quality of your life worse.

Strangely, the hearing test is not part of the annual physical, even though auditory loss is common in human beings. Instead of allowing your hearing sense to continue to diminish, ask a doctor to perform a checkup at least once a year. If you do have a hearing issue, it can be caught before the situation gets any worse. While surgery can only fix certain problems, there are plenty of hearing devices on the market that can enhance the quality of your life. Though you may not want to address the fact that you do need an aid, avoiding a visit to the doctor is not the right solution. There's a good chance you know somebody who uses or knows a close friend who uses a hearing aid. Don't be afraid to reach out to them for advice about how to combat hearing loss.

Not being able to understand your loved ones is obviously a scary and frustrating situation. However, the resolution to your issue is simple: go get a hearing test. By making an appointment with an audiology, you can rest easy knowing that you'll get the proper guidance and suggestions of how you can improve your hearing and how to deal with the current state of your auditory abilities. Instead of locking yourself up courtesy of fear of lack of hearing, take your life back and make an appointment with a medical professional.
