The Taylormade Rocketballz Irons are a very recent addition to the golf club market. Released in early 2012, they are designed with the intention of being an easy to hit, very forgiving iron that also provides players with great distance. All the RocketBallz irons feature a large, thin club face thats strong and stiff at the perimeter and thin at the inner edge, allowing the face to flex freely like a trampoline. The design is such that no part of the club head structure inhibits or restricts the flexion of the face. The RocketBallz club heads are also progressively shaped, with smaller, compact short-irons, deep undercut-cavity middle-irons and large, hollow long-irons.
The irons also utilize Tailor-mades Inverted Cone clubface technology, which expands the portion of the face that delivers high ball speeds, promoting more distance, even on off-centre hits. At address it can be seen that the top line is definitely on the thicker side, however anyone that already plays with game improvement irons will be very familiar with this kind of look, and thus it shouldn't be something that really bothers most golfers. They feel so soft yet solid at impact at the same time, all through the set. They are clubs that are very easy to hit, it may be hard to find a set of golf clubs that make hitting a golf ball easier than these irons. But not only are the Rocketballz set very easy to hit from almost any lie, there's also the added bonus that the technology Taylormade has put into the clubs do make them very long as well.
They generally seem to be at least one club longer than many other new iron sets available, meaning that a Rocketballz 6 iron will hit a golf ball as far or even further than the 5 iron would for many other iron sets.
Even the few miss-hits that occur still send the golf ball flying long, high and straight almost every time. The golf ball consistently lands softly and responds well on a variety of greens.
Pushed or pulled shots definitely are very rare to see due to the clubs fantastic forgiveness. As a consequence the Taylormade Rocketballz aren't irons that you can easily work the golf ball with, however they are primarily game improvement clubs, so they weren't really made to offer a lot of workability.
Taylormade R11 Irons:
Released to the golf world in late 2011, the Taylormade R11 Irons are generally aimed more at the mid to higher handicap golfer. Like the R9 irons from Taylormade, the R11 irons also feature fairly large oversized heads, intended to give golfers a greater amount of feel and control, in combination with impressive distance.
Graphite and steel shaft options are both available; with the R11 irons we tested being equipped with the KBS 90 steel shafts in regular flex.
The clubs really do look fantastic, and one of the first things noticed was that the oversized heads actually sit behind the golf ball very well at address, with the top line actually not appearing too thick or chunky despite the larger heads.
Taylor Made Burner 2.0 Irons 4-SW Graphite:
The Burner 2.0 irons improve on previous models with more consistent distance gapping, greater playability, and an improved sound and feel. The long irons are engineered to promote forgiveness and distance, the middle irons promote accuracy, and the short irons have excellent responsiveness. The irons each feature a thin face and Inverted Cone Technology to enhance speed across the entire face for farther distances even on off-center hits. The Multi-Functional Sole adds a low CG and thin sole playability.
Each iron individually engineered, resulting in the enhancement of multiple club properties that promote distance, uniform distance-gaps, increased playability and better sound and feel. Thin-faced, high COR long-irons promote faster ball speed for longer distance. CG location in each head is precision-placed to optimize long-, middle- and short-iron flight; high-COR faces promote fast ball speed for long distance in the long-irons.
Taylormade R9 irons:
Released to the golf world in late 2009, the Taylormade R9 Irons are designed with a more traditional, clean look, and are intended primarily to be game improvement clubs. The clubs feature fairly large oversized heads, which are manufactured with Taylormade Inverted Cone Technology, intended to give golfers a greater amount of feel and control, in combination with impressive distance. Graphite and steel shaft options are both available.
The clubs do look great, and one of the first things noticed was that the oversized heads actually sit behind the golf ball very well at address, with the top line not appearing too thick or chunky despite the larger heads.
The forgiveness in particular that the oversized heads on the R9 irons give you is excellent, throughout the set, many shots seem to be hardly affected by miss-hitting the ball at all.
When you do hit the ball well though, the feeling that you get is almost as good as you will find in a game improvement iron of this type. The Taylormade R9 irons are very soft and smooth at impact, it can almost feel like you're hardly hitting a golf ball at all sometimes on the good swings.
The longer R9 irons in particular are very easy to hit in comparison to many other models. This is mainly down to the design, in which Taylormade have fitted what's called a Velocity Control Chamber behind the clubface in the longer and mid irons, in order to aid performance.
Taylormade burner 09 irons
Graphite and steel shaft options are both available for players. Looking at the set as a whole, the longer irons are definitely a bit chunkier than the shorter irons. With the idea being to make the longer irons not too dissimilar to hybrids so that they will hopefully be very easy to hit, from all sorts of lies. Along with that these Burner irons are also designed to give golfers an impressively high ball speed off the club face, which is a feature of many recent irons made by Taylormade.
As long as the conditions you're playing in aren't too windy, these irons will be very accurate. The high ball flight means that high winds can affect some approach shots with these irons more than others, but this is something that players can learn to take into account. However if you're playing with these clubs on a day that's relatively calm, then you should find them to be very forgiving and a joy to play with. Very few shots go astray with these irons, even on miss-hits the ball generally holds its line very well once airborne.
Taylor Made Burner Plus Irons
The Taylormade Burner Plus Irons were released to the golf world in 2008, and are designed and intended to be very easy to hit and also very forgiving. The club head has a relatively large sole on these Burner Plus Irons, which is supposed to help players to launch the golf ball better. The clubs also have quite a large club face to also help in making hitting the ball easier, whether in the fairway or in the rough. Taylormade have included what is called Superfast Technology with these irons. Which here means slightly lighter and longer shafts, with the intention of increasing a players swing speed so that the ball will fly off the club face faster. One of the first things that we noticed was that the large club faces on these irons do help to inspire confidence at address. However it does take a few practice swings and a few shots to get used to the overall lighter weight of the irons, but this isn't too much of an issue. As mentioned, these Taylormade irons were intended to be easy to hit, and they certainly are that. Once you get used to the weight and get a feel for the clubs, it probably wouldn't be too difficult for most golfers, even higher handicappers, to start hitting reasonably consistent shots, and playing better golf.
Also another thing that was very clear, and something that everyone whom we spoke to who has used the Taylormade Burner Plus irons seemed to agree on, is how impressive the distance and power is with these clubs.
Despite launching the ball on a fairly high trajectory a lot of the time, the distance and carry is still very good due to the impressively high ball speeds that the Burner Plus irons create.
