You cannot work on high current installations if you have a low current qualification for example, but you only need a low current qualification if you are going to be working on residential type installations. All of this can take quite a few years to get finished. You need to have the will power and staying power to get through all of it. You need to make sure that you have the time set aside to do the studying. It is not something that you will really be able to do on a part time basis, especially the apprenticeship portion of the qualification. You will need to essentially work as an electricians grunt for a while and start to do small installations and things like that which is a full time job that will likely not be well paid.
What this means is that you need to have some kind of arrangement with your spouse or parents or someone like that to keep you going until you qualify and can start to do work at full pay or at full price if you are intending on becoming an independent electrical contractor. Studying to become an electrician is much like any other full time degree or diploma. You have to be sure that you are dedicated and able to commit the time and energy.
Although there will always be a demand for good, qualified electricians and you can be sure of getting a job of some kind, even if you have to be an independent contractor and run your own business, you have to be sure that you have the will power to get your qualification. You are not legally allowed to practice if you are not qualified and are not registered with the relevant authorities. There are all things that you have to factor into your career decision making process. Rather be sure that you are going to be happy before you commit to something.
