Reliability and comfort are the two major requirements. It took us a while to get the right ones. All too often jackets describe themselves as waterproof and breathable, and yet they are not.
And, when you are miles away from your home or vehicle and the heavens open, you need to know that your jacket will not let you down. We have come home soaked on a number of previous occasions, until we found the right one.
The Requirements of a Great Jacket:
Our needs for a jacket was one that we could easily fit in a rucksack, one that was breathable, and one that was reliable in whatever weather we would endure from the top of Ben Nevis to the South West Coast Path..year-round! This is quite some requirements for a jacket to live up to!
There are a range of jackets on the market; they range in colour, branding, thickness, material, designated activity, and cost.
Waterproof & Breathable:
So as I have previously stated, we wanted a jacket that was waterproof.
The next thing we looked for was breath-ability, because when walking in summer showers or on the steep slopes of Ben Nevis in winter we do sweat!
And there is nothing worse than your inner clothing and lining of the jacket hanging on to all of this moisture.
Not only does it not smell ideal, it also means that the moment you stop, you will cool down very quickly, and this can be risky, especially in cold locations.
So a breathable jacket that could be worn with a base layer under it that would wick away moisture was exactly what we were looking for.
So, How Did The North Face Resolve Jacket Perform:
When Georgina did her Youngest Solo 6 Peaks Challenge she had to have a jacket that would not weigh her down, but would be up to the task if conditions deteriorated on the mountains.
She endured it all, sunny Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike, very wet and windy Snowdon, then absolutely torrential rain, high winds, and thick fog in Ireland and the Isle of Man! Her jacket did not let her down!

Georgina used the North Face Resolve Jacket.
It has been through her Youngest Solo 6 Peaks Challenge, Ten Tors, and Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Bronze, and has been through all the months of training too.
It is a lightweight waterproof jacket, it is breathable, keeps out the wind too, packs down and is easy to carry.
It really is a versatile jacket, and although it is light and not particularly thick, it has usually been worn just with a decent base layer, or occasionally a mid-layer on the very cold summits.

Georgina did manage to get caught on deer fencing in the Scottish Highlands when she first got the jacket. This resulted in a small hole on the sleeve.
However, that small hole has been through a lot since it first occurred, and thankfully the rip-stop material has done what it is supposed to do, and with everything the jacket has been through and the miles it has covered, the hole is still the same size as when she originally did it.
