subject: Uses Of Corrosion Inhibitors [print this page]

Corrosion Inhibitors are the chemical compounds which are used for decreasing the corrosion rate of some materials like metals and alloy. Generally metals and alloys are prone to rust which affect vehicle and engines to perform, to decrease that rust or to preventing metals from rusting, the chemicals which are used are known as corrosion inhibitors.

Corrosion inhibitors are used in wide range of commercial, industrial and process application. The effectiveness of the substance depends upon the fluid composition, quantity of water and flow regime. It works by forming a thin layer or film on the surface of the metal and alloy. Various types of corrosion inhibitors are available according to their usage such as corrosion inhibitors- amine based, corrosion inhibitor- oil based and H2S scavenger.

Amine based corrosion inhibitors protects metal surfaces in both the shallow and upper part and also protects the tubular goods and completion tools. It is compatible with chemicals like sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride and brine fluids etc. On the other hand oil based inhibitors are applicable when severely corrosive conditions are anticipated. It reduces the potential for corrosion in air, mud drilling and in all water based mud. H2S scavengers are oil soluble inhibitors designed to reduce concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. It helps in improving refinery operations and can be used in variety of process stream.

Other different types of corrosion inhibitors are sodium nitrate, phenylendiamine, hexamine, dimethylethanolamine, benzotriazole and polyaniline. Actually you often use these types of products in your daily life as well. For example the oil for your bike chain, you used it on your gardener tools and power tools etc to protect them from rusting. It is also used in many ways in your vehicle like used in your car cooling system to stop the engine from overheating, used in some vehicle parts to avoid weakness of structures that may results very dangerous and used in diesel to protect your vehicle engine from rusting. Corrosion inhibitors are often added to paints and even in Antiseptics used to control microbial corrosion.

The main uses of Corrosion inhibitors are:

To stop the rusting, anodic corrosion works by coating the metal with a layer of chromates.

Oxygen scavengers react with dissolved oxygen and reduce the risk of corrosion by cathodic corrosion inhibitors.

It is used in pipelines and storage tanks which are used to carry and store gases and liquids to prevent them from rusting.

In laundary products, soap and in chain oil it is widely used to prevent metal parts they touch from rust.

In heating system, anti corrosion inhibitors are used to prevent metal pipes from rusting.

Today large part of our society is dependent on chemicals, almost everywhere these chemicals are used in our daily life whether it is your soap or detergent powder or even in your toothpaste as well. Chemicals need to handle with care because if not properly used may harm our health too.

There are various types of chemicals produced by the chemical companies and are categorized in different groups such as consumer chemicals, commercial chemicals and fine or special chemicals.
