subject: Apps That Made It Big On Ios And Android [print this page]

Popularity certainly has various levelsPopularity certainly has various levels. In sports such as basketball, there are popular NBA stars like Blake Griffin and Carmelo Anthony. There are champions like Tim Duncan and Dirk Novitzki. Then, there are celebrities---the cross-over stars---like Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. The level of James and Bryant are examples of those whose popularity transcends the specific category they belong to. Manny Pacquiao in boxing and Cristiano Ronaldo in football are also examples of celebrities who have cross-over appeal. In the world of mobile app development technology, there are also applications which were able to make an impact both in the Android and iOS community.

These are applications that were able to bring their popularity across other platforms. It's not an easy feat considering the huge number of applications available both in the iOS and Android platform. Here, we will list some of the apps that made it big in both mobile OS. We shall name the cross-over stars of the mobile app world, with number one (1) having the most impact on both OS.

5. Draw Something

This app was certainly the craze in the first quarter of 2012. The objective of Draw Something is to draw the word generated by the game. The other player should be able to recognize what you drew for you to win points. The game requires internet connection as it allows you to play with your friends in the social networking site Facebook

4. Viber

Viber was first launched for iPhone in 2010 to compete with Skype. Viber allows users to send text messages, images and make calls via the internet. It was eventually released on the Android platform due to its success in iOS.

3. Instagram

Instagram is a photo-sharing program that also features social networking. Just like Viber and Draw Something, Instagram was also launched initially for iOS where it gained much fanfare among iPhone and iPod users. It was eventually released on Android last April of 2012.

2. Temple Run

Temple run was perhaps the biggest game in iOS for 2011. This endless action video game developed by Imangi was undoubtedly the most popular game at that time. The game starts by showing your character running out of the temple and being chased by temple monkeys. The objective of the game is to survive as long as possible while getting coins. The game took some time before being released on Android. Temple Run also came up with a spinoff, named Temple Run: Brave, as a promotion for the Disney-produced film Brave.

1. Angry Birds

This game may very well be the Michael Jordan of iOS and Android apps. There are plenty of games that enjoyed huge success in the two platforms, but the Angry Birds game still remains to be untouchable. Rovio certainly made all the right moves when it came up with Angry Birds as it became an instant hit on the iOS platform and on Android eventually. The Angry Birds franchise was able to release other versions of the game, with Angry Birds Star Wars being the most recent.

So there you have it, the list of the cross-over stars of the two leading mobile operating systems. With the abundance of Android apps development, and iPhone programming every day, it's not impossible that another Angry Bird-like app will emerge and take iOS and Android by storm.
