subject: Kuirau Park The Park With A Bubbling Lake [print this page]

Kuirau Park is a place in Rotorua New Zealand that is visited by many people to relax and kick about. The many footpaths lead people to many dynamic environments. If you stay on the calm side of the safety fence, the park is generally a fun and safe place for the visitors. There are some eruptions that happen from time to time. There is a small lake in the park from the time of early Maoris which was much cooler in the olden times and was known as Taokahu.

There is a legendary story related to the lake. It is said that a pretty young maiden who was called Kuirau was dipping in the waters of the lake when a taniwha who is a legendary creature hauled her to his den underneath the lake. The gods got really angry with this creature and made the lake boil so the giant taniwha would be destroyed and would not come back to life forever. From that day onwards the bubbling boiling lake and the scorching land around the lake was named on behalf of the lost woman even though the spelling has changed over time. The Kuirau Park is a relaxing location which spreads across 30 hectares of land area with many play areas and fields which are situated close to the city centre. This place was reserved as an area of recreation in the 1930's during the depression.

In 2001 a sudden eruption of mud and rocks the bulk of footballs turned up high about 10 meters in the air out of the blues. Before these rocks shot up there was steam emitting from all over the place. Two years late also the same scenario occurred surprising its visitors and giving them a rare opportunity to witness. This park also houses a famous weekly market which features very fresh and luscious stuff. You can spend your nights in a romantic hotel in Rotorua to make your vacation a memorable one.
