subject: Understanding Modern Designer Watches [print this page]

There are so many different brands of watches and that can make it very difficult to make a choice that you can be happy with. Some brands are more geared towards women while some are aimed just at a male market and there are even some that produce unisex models. Ultimately the choice of a watch depends on personal taste however this can make choosing a watch for someone else very difficult. This guide will look at some common features of watches which might help you in your decision making.

Chronograph

Many watches that are sold today are called chronograph watches, this is a term that many of us will have heard yet few know exactly what it is. Put simply a chronograph watch has the ability to record time, that is, it has a stop watch or other timing ability. There are both analogue and digital versions of chronograph with the analogue versions often costing more due the intricate nature of small mechanical moving parts. Whether a watch is a chronograph or not should factor very little in a choice as many people fail to use the feature however, if your loved one is a fan of sports then it may very well be a must have!

Digital vs Analogue

There can be a certain degree of snobbery when it comes to the digital vs. analogue watch debate with many people feeling that digital watches are cheap and immature. The extent to which this is true is not really important because some people find the simplicity of digital watches a large bonus whereas others want a traditional and authentic analogue watch. One benefit to using digital is the ability to have multiple functions, fans of Casio watches will be aware of just how many features can be placed on a watch.

Strap Type

If there is one area of the watch world where you are truly spoilt for choice then it is in deciding what type of strap to use. There are gold and silver bracelets, leather, ceramic links, rubber and many more to choose between and ultimately it comes down to personally preference again. There are some differences between brands, for example DKNY watches are more likely to use gold links and Diesel watches are more likely to use rubber straps. The most important thing overall is the fit of the watch, you can generally assume a leather or rubber strapped watch will fit with little adjustment whereas a bracelet or linked strap will have to be specially sized.
