subject: Types Of Thermostats [print this page]

A thermostat has a control mechanism that can be used to adjust and maintain the temperature of the interiors of the appliance. This can be done by regulating the flow and transfer of heat through the switches that are provided. Thermostats have different sensors that enable us to measure the temperature inside the thermostat.

The word thermostat has been derived from the Greek words thermos meaning hot and statos meaning a standing. The first electric room thermostat was discovered by Warren S. Johnson in the year 1883.

The following read will give you an idea of the guidelines that should be followed while choosing a thermostat:

1.Choose the type of thermostat

Some of the types of thermostats that you can choose from are:

Manual or Mechanical Thermostat Here, the temperature setting can be controlled manually. It is best suited for people who stay at home frequently and usually opt for a fixed temperature.

Programmable Thermostat This can be use to automatically adjust the temperatures throughout the day. You only need to regulate the temperature to suit your comfort level.

Digital Non-Programmable Thermostat It is best suited for people who prefer the temperature of the thermostat to be manually controlled. However, it consists of an LCD display screen that gives you the opportunity to see the temperature that you have opted for.

2.Choose the type of Programmable Thermostat

Some of the varieties of programmable thermostats are:

7 Day they are most flexible of all the programmable thermostats because it gives you the opportunity to adjust the temperature of the thermostat frequently. You can adjust the temperatures four periods per day, on everyday of the week. This is the best suited for people who have a rigid schedule.

5-1-1 Day this allows you to set the programme once for the weekdays and a separate programme for the weekends, that is, on Saturday and Sunday. They can be programme for up to four periods for every programmable session.

5-2 Day this allows you to regulate one programme for the weekdays and separate once for Saturday and Sunday. It can be programmed for up to four periods for every programmable session.

1 Week this gives you the opportunity to set one programme for all the days of the week and regulate it up to four sessions.

3.Choose the type of heating and cooling system

Heating and air conditioning systems can be of three types:

Heating system

Heating and cooling system

Cooling system

The type of heating fuel can be oil, gas or electric, with or without air conditioning. Central heat and air systems and central heating system allow for both single-stage as well as multi-stage heating and cooling.

4.Some other considerations

Choose the heat pumps carefully, especially if you stay in colder climates. Heat pumps have an Emergency Heat (EH) that provides a back-up heat source, like gas furnace. This serves as an efficient alternative to heat pumps and proves to be helpful when the heat pump is not working efficiently.

If you want to purchase a thermostat, you can choose one from the leading thermostat manufacturers, Honeywell in Ontario.
