subject: Home Health: New Year - New You.... [print this page]

So, another year is about to pass us bySo, another year is about to pass us by. Question time: How many of you stuck to your fitness goals for 2012???

Every New Year brings about it New Year Resolutions. I want to be fit. I want a better body. I want more muscle. The list is endless. Whats more, the failure rate is far too high for my liking. Year on year numerous people sign up to expensive gym memberships only to stumble at the first hurdle and continue paying for something that gets no use. The truth is people often underestimate how much work you must put in for that beach body, but that should never stop you. Wanting it is stage one, doing something about it is stage two and stage three is showing it off!!

My Home Fitness offers a more cost effective option for those wishing to make a difference. Why pay out hundreds of pounds a year for gym membership when under fifty pounds could buy you some free weights, or a fitness DVD and ankle weights or a pull up and push up bar or a sit up bench. The benefit of owning these is theyre yours. They are there and ready to use whenever you get the urge. Going to a gym takes time and effort and you will find that in the New Year they will be crammed with people, and lets not forget those who appear to live at the gym making you feel incredibly self-conscious (at a gym I used to be a member of we referred to them as the Muscle Club!!)

Fitness should be fun, and if its not, change your routine, find something that you enjoy. There is no better feeling in the world than seeing progress, bigger arms, a trimmer stomach or defined calves.

Too many people jump on the diet train in the New Year and whilst I am the first person to agree that eating healthily is important, starving yourself certainly isnt. Diets typically work as a short term fix, we have all heard the term yo-yo dieters, these are people who diet, get to the desired weight and then go back to their old eating habits thus putting the weight back on before embarking on the next diet. The healthier option would be to eat sensibly and exercise, you will get better results in the long term.

My recommendation would be to first of all define your goal. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to tone up? Do you want bigger muscles? Whatever your goal is, tailoring a workout is paramount to realising it. A great source for ideas or routines is YouTube; anything you can think of doing has probably been done by someone, somewhere at some point.

My New Years Resolution is to build up muscle mass and tone up. This will be achieved with a combination of cardiovascular work and weight training. I am not being unrealistic with my goals as I realise now, after 32 years that I am what I am, I am lean, I do require a huge calorie intake just to maintain my existing weight (I weigh thirteen and a half stone) and if I ever truly wanted to substantially bulk up it would require a dramatic lifestyle change which quite frankly I could do without! Be realistic with your goals and you will stand a much greater chance of hitting them.

So, there you have it. Getting in good shape should not be a chore and it certainly shouldnt cost you a fortune. Have a look through our site. You will find something for any budget and to suit any goal.

Good luck.
