subject: Ethics In Fashion A Demand Of Society [print this page]

Fashion industry is multi billion industry and behind this glamorous catwalk hides the sordid reality of working conditions around the world. This industry is made with multiple supply chains from all over the globe. Clothes are usually manufactured in other part of the world than they are designed at or have to be sold. All over the world, the garment workers have to undergo poor working conditions and abuse of human rights as a day to day experience. They go through excessive working hours, forced over time, exploitation, lack of job security, poverty wages, exhaustion, sexual harassment and mental stress which is repeated over and over again.

There is a need to place the laws in for ethics in fashion industry. This cannot be done by a single company; this change can only brought about by the whole industry. Image is everything in the fashion industry. A lot of luxury brands in fashion industry are now moving to ethical fashion because that is the need of the globe currently.

Luxury clothing or for that matter anything luxurious is usually thought to be expensive over environment and society. It is usually believed that anything that is made luxurious is usually made by exploitation of people and environment. That is not entirely true. A number of luxury brands like Etrala London follow ethics very seriously. This is usually done at 3 levels.

Social: Wellbeing of the labor and communities is what is needed for our fashion industry. Proper working conditions and labor rights are given to all the labor that is used to produce these garments. All the efforts are put in to reduce poverty and exploitation of workforce. After all, people behind the business are the most important asset of a business.

Environmental: These companies make all the effort to recycle and properly dispose of the toxic waste and chemical use in the industry. Using or creating eco-friendly fabric is another area for innovation for this industry. Minimizing the environmental footprint is one of the major aims of ethical fashion.

Commercial: Without sustainability, no business can survive. Developing or promoting sustainability standards for fashion is another area where ethical fashion works. The need is to create quality products or services that meet market needs and demands and fairly marketed.

A number of organizations are working to make ethical fashion a reality because this is the demand of the market today. Glamorous side of fashion does have a dark side which is full of exploitation and poverty. If the major luxury brands in the world take up the work of ethics in fashion, it will make a huge difference to the society.

The consumers of luxury clothing that includes elegant duffle coats for women and designer evening dresses which can make any woman feel and look like a Hollywood actress, are unaware of the cost that society has paid to produce it. It is important to create the awareness among the consumers so that ethics come as a demand from the market and not just from authorities.
