As the most established Executive Search / Recruitment firm in Mongolia, Mongolia Talent Network were asked to share some thoughts on the Mongolian Talent Pool at the recent Business Council of Mongolia meeting.

The main points of the presentation were that the local talent pool is relatively small (a working population in Mongolia of only just over 1m) but bright and capable. There is a literacy rate of 98% and the population is very focused on qualifications and development. A large percentage have had experience overseas, either studying or working primarily.

While some look to bringing Mongolians home as a solution to some of the talent shortages, we believe that the key will be accessing the best talent in market and developing your existing talent. This pool of repats currently overseas is only slightly over 100,000, 41% of those are working. These people undeniably have a lot of value to contribute to the Mongolian economy, with those with work experience potentially having the most to offer regarding Mongolia Careers . However, the number is relatively small and not all will be ready to come home.

In terms of attracting the best local talent already in Mongolia, there are a number of further challenges:

Firstly, as in most markets, the best candidates are usually in jobs.

Secondly, there is a dynamic that is fairly specific to Mongolia. Many local hiring managers may feel a duty to help their friends / family find a good job. This may restrict them from always pursuing the best talent in the market. Many companies find that a high percentage of their employees are in some way related.

Thirdly, candidates don"t always respond to job ads and prefer to be introduced. They may believe that their application won"t be properly considered if they apply cold or may be concerned that their details will end up being shared indiscreetly.

Finally, there is a lack of clarity on job options and salaries, which may prevent people from recognising the strength of an offer or from pursuing open opportunities.
