The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is a national government body for scientific research. CSIRO was found as the Advisory Council of Science and Industry. It is engaged in research in diversified fields with greater focus on science. CSIRO operates 56 sites throughout the world, which include three National Research Facilities and more than 30 other research facilities. It also has a laboratory in France and a field station in Mexico. CSIRO has been involved in more than 740 research activities and its customers range from foreign governments, small companies to large multi-nationals and international foundations. CSIRO also designed a Flagship to integrate, focus and direct national scientific resources. Currently, the organisation supports nine Flagships. The divisions through which CSIRO operates include astronomy and space science, earth science and resource engineering, energy technology, food and nutritional sciences, land and water, livestock industries, marine and atmospheric research, materials science and engineering, plant industry and ecosystems, amongst others. The research highlights of CSIRO include the invention of atomic absorption spectroscopy, invention of the insect repellent Aerogard and development of the first polymer banknote. CSIRO is headquartered in Campbell, Australia.
