subject: Higher Education Vacillating Among States: Suggestions For Change [print this page]

Education is a precious asset to be provided to all alike. The quality of education varies between the States; while some of them are fast progressing, others are catching up even if the pace is slightly slowed. Higher education improvement requires awareness amongst the pupils as well as the administrators. Lack of communication between them prevents them from catering to the requirements of an organization. Provision for lacking essentials need to be made at the earliest which would probably help increase the number of enrollments and improve the state-wise number in India.

Quality of education varies between the States in the country and higher education is termed well in the case of technical institute establishment for engineers or in case of the establishment of colleges with a bunch of ample updated facilities favoring higher degree. The recent figures determine the rating amongst colleges. Kerala, which was ranked very high on this list, is now surpassed by Goa. The State has secured the top position as it features more number of pupils for higher education especially women folk. This advancement in the State invokes a sense of joy though it would be stronger if Kerala retained the high number. The survey states that in case of Goa, the university count has been stagnant and yet produced a high enrollment number. This would mean that students themselves have shown a keen interest in higher education which is a good sign. The area of interest has been quoted as research which is encouraging for other States to try and match this high number.

Kerala, on the other hand has had to fight some issues; the main one being the dearth of academic tutors. This falling number is of a serious concern as students need motivation at every level to take up higher degrees and make a strong career. Suggestions on this regard have been put through; the main one being categorization of the university, based on pupil count as well as the types of specialized modules. An additional move has been the provision for grants by the UGC. This would encourage universities to work towards improving their quality so as to be a part of the healthy competition state-wise and aim for the allotted funding facility. With regard to improvements in the present system, they are urged to make it a semester based programme. This would push the pupils to study throughout the year and not just at the time of examination. In addition, since the portions are divided amongst semesters, they are able to study a specific amount of syllabus with focused attention and less pressure. Easing out the pressure to perform and excel would mean the students would naturally perform better and hence a brighter quality of students would be produced from each State. It has also been suggested that providing pupils with an option of taking up course modules from the college of admission and a facility to study an elective from a highly specialized university would add value to ones resume as he would garner additional knowledge and skills.

Such changes need to be incorporated in all universities irrespective of the State as they seem transparent and helpful for both the pupil and the University of Choice.
