subject: The Innovation Of Modern Double Glazing [print this page]

One of the most important issues of the modern day economic and political environment is the debate regarding energy usage. With the costs of energy production and importation constantly on the rise, it is becoming increasingly expensive to heat homes and keep cars on the road. Politically there is a great emphasis being placed on energy efficiency in businesses, with new legislation being to reward those businesses that take proactive steps in cutting energy usage being introduced next year. However, it is in the home that the issue will hit home for the majority of consumers as each winter the costs of energy rise again and again.

Fortunately there are ways in which home energy usage can be cut, there are both small and large changes that can be made depending on just how much each person can afford to spend. At the smallest end of the scale, energy efficient appliances can be bought to replace old ones; these changes provide incremental savings and happen over time as old appliances break. There are also small changes that can be made to provide instant results with the most common being to replace incandescent light bulbs with LED or energy saving models. The actual savings per bulb may not be large but the effect on a street level or even national level is a dramatic reduction in the demand for energy.

These small changes are only ever going to have a small impact on the overall energy usage of your home because their efficiency savings can be far overshadowed by the inefficiencies of old boilers or a lack of home insulation. It is therefore the big, and unfortunately more expensive, changes that can have a large and instantly measurable effect on energy usage. One of the most common large investments in the home is to replace single glazed windows or old double glazed windows, while many people may not realise it this is one of the best ways to improve energy efficiency.

Modern double glazed windows are highly thermally efficient due to their innovative design and construction methods. They are also something that most homes will eventually need to have installed and although they do have a large expense associated with them, they should be viewed more as an investment. As it is an investment it is vital to use the best possible double glazing glass, surprisingly not all glass is equal when it comes to energy efficiency. Make sure you find out about energy efficient windows by talking to your local double glazing installers and start saving soon.
