subject: An Orthopedic Specialist Treats Musculoskeletal System [print this page]

An orthopedic specialist focuses on the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system is comprised of joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and the bones. All of these body parts work together to allow for human movement. Specialists and surgeons work to prevent problems, and when troubles occur, they diagnose the situation and treat any disorder or injury that is evident. Some common areas of treatment include joint reconstruction and revision, ankle or foot injuries, hand problems, spine disorders, tumors related to bone cancer, and sports injuries. These doctors treat both children and adults of all ages.

Joints are the hinges of the human body. Our knees, elbows, shoulders, hands, feet, ankles, and any other moving parts are hinged with a joint. When disease or injury occurs to these hinges, a person's mobility is affected and his or her quality of life may decline. Some diseases that affect these joints include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, dislocated shoulders, and more. These conditions can be treated with physical therapy, medication, or surgery.

Spinal disorders can be evident at birth, can develop over time, or can occur due to being injured in accidents. Many spine problems are best diagnosed and treated in childhood. Scoliosis, for example, is a curved spine that can be helped through wearing braces, surgical intervention, and other techniques. Degenerative spine diseases can reduce a patients' ability to move easily but with medical intervention by an orthopedic specialist, symptoms can be alleviated and wellbeing restored.

When hands have maladies, this can be a devastating situation. Human hands are used every day from the time a person wakes up in the morning till when they go to sleep at night. Over the course of one's life, fingers, wrists, and palms of the hand become like finely tuned machines. They cook, brew coffee, give massages, style hair, paint pictures, type on a keyboard, drive a car, and much more. Without the use of our hands, our freedom to live our lives to the fullest can be greatly reduced. Individuals are often advised to take extra care of their hands through wearing gloves, exercising them in between bouts of repetitive movement, using caution with sharp tools, and wearing sunscreen on them.

Sports injuries are quite common because of the nature of each activity. Running, jumping, throwing and catching balls: all can be great fun but can lead to accidental injuries. If an athlete is injured while playing football, soccer, baseball, basketball, or bowling, it's imperative that he or she be tended to by an orthopedic specialist right away. The quicker the medical response, the more likely the person will heal without any ramifications.

When a patient has a malady in his or her joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, bones, or nerves, he or she should seek diagnostics and treatment from an orthopedic specialist. Through a regime of medication, physical therapy, or surgical intervention, many problems can be corrected by this skilled and experienced physician.
