Later the land was under the East India Company and it served as the summer capital of Madras Presidency. The hill station was also termed as Queen of Hill Stations. The climate in this part is pleasant throughout the year and one could say that in Ooty it is always spring.

Tourists flocking in to Ooty would be left speechless with the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains. A vintage train ride from Mettupalayam to Ooty, through a scenic route would be a memorable although it would take up to 5 hours compared to 2 hours on road. But to explore the nature it is the best way as you could come across beautiful sceneries. It doesn"t end here tourist could plan a visit to the famous Mudumalai National Park, a Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiri Hills. This Tiger reserve also includes some parts of Jawaharlal Nehru National Park. Another popular tourist attraction is Needle Rock in Gudalur which is around 50 Kms from Ooty. The government botanical garden is another attraction in Ooty and it is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. This garden is stretched up to 22 hectares and it is on the lower slopes of Doddabetta peak. Frog hill view point in Gudalur also attracts many tourists. The mysterious frog shape of a hill view could be seen from here. The artificial lake, developed by Mr. John Sullivan attracts tourists as they have boating facilities in this lake. Fishing in this lake can be done and the permission for the same could be obtained from the office of Assistant Director of Fisheries. Adjacent to it is the famous Wenlock Downs, a sprawling area of around 20,000 acres. In Wenlock Downs you could find the factory of the Hindustan Photo Films Company, Government Sheep Farm, Gymkhana Club and Golf Course. The largest rose garden in India is here. The Government Rose Garden was established in the year 1995 and is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. Tourist could view the garden from Nila Maadam, an observation platform at the slope of the gardens.

If you are planning a visit with your family and friends, make sure to book budget hotels in Ooty way in advance. As last minute booking would cost you a bomb and you have to limit yourself to other attractions. Also to enjoy Ooty holidays, it is advisable that you do a better research and plan your itinerary and stick to the same. You would find many accommodation options in this place but prefer the one from where all the attractions could be reached easily as you wouldn"t want to waste a lot of time in travelling.
