subject: Order Of Operations With Variables [print this page]

Introduction to order of operations with variables:

In math, If we have to solve an algebraic expression, we have to follow the order of operations. For getting the perfect answer we have to follow the order of operation. In order of operation we can follow the rule of pemdas, the meaning of pemdas is parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. If we want to solve an expression then we have to solve the expression in the order of pemdas. First we have to simplify the parentheses and exponents and then we have to solve multiplication and division and then at last we have to solve addition and subtraction. Here we are going to learn, how to solve an expression with variables using order of oerations.

Example Problem-1 for Order of Operations with Variables:

( 7x + 4x ) + ( 5x + 8x ) '.' 9x

Solution:

According to Pemdas rule we have to simplify Parentheses and exponents

So we are going to solve the Parentheses in the expression.

(11x) + (13x) '.' 9x

Now we have to solve the multiplication and division in the expression

11x + 117x

Now we have to solve for addition

11x + 117x = 128x

So the answer is 128x

Example Problem -2 for Order of Operations with Variables:

3y '.' ( 5y + 7y ) + 42y '.' (1y + 2y)

Solution:

According to Pemdas rule we have to simplify Parentheses and exponents

So we are going to solve the Parentheses and exponents in the expression.

3y '.' (12y) + 16y '.'(1y)

Now we have to solve the multiplication and division in the expression

36y + 16y

Now we can solve the addition

36y + 16y = 52y

So the answer will be 52y

Example Problem - 3 for Order of Operations with Variables:

( 5z + 1z ) + ( 7z + 6z ) '.' 1z

Solution:

According to Pemdas rule we have to simplify Parentheses and exponents

So we are going to solve the Parentheses in the expression.

(6z) + (13z) '.' z

Now we have to solve the multiplication and division in the expression

6z + 13z2

we cannot simplify further. So the answer will be 6z + 13z2
