subject: Luau Dinner Traditions And Luau Package At The Embassy Suites Waikiki [print this page]

Step back in time and visit the beautiful and breathtaking Hawaiian island of Oahu. Here you can dine at a traditional Hawaiian Luau, which is part of the Hawaiian culture and customs. This tradition features Kalua Puaa, or roast pork which is slowly cooked in an underground pit.

The pit is prepared in which banana leaves, rocks, and logs are put inside. There is a certain way that the pit is prepared and this is usually done by people who are professionals in this line of work. They know that in order for it to taste just right, the preparations must be exact.

After several hours of cooking, the luau is ready. Not only is roast pork served, but various fish dishes and chicken too. Poi is always served at a luau. It is a traditional Hawaiian/Polynesian dish that is made from the taro plant. It is also known as arrowroot.

The history of the luau dates back to 1819, when the King of the Hawaiian Islands, along with his wife, decided to break the traditional religious custom, which was, to allow men and women to eat together. Before this time, it was considered a breach of religious principles as the genders were divided when it came time for meals. In other words, men were not allowed to eat with the womenfolk.

Another thing about meals prior to 1819, women, and commoners were not permitted to eat some of the things that were eaten by the King or male counterparts either. These foods included, but were not limited to pork, bananas, and coconuts. There was much merriment when the luau changed all that. And, no wonder!

At a luau, you will not only dine for several hours. This is an event that you will enjoy traditional Hawaiian music as well as some activities. At the festivities, you will be entertained by native Hawaiian musicians that play on instruments that include bamboo pipes, drums, and guitars.

It was once put on to celebrate a birthday or commemoration of a coronation or another prestigious event. A luau is not something that happens everyday in Hawaii and villagers from all over gather for this event. It is definitely something that a tourist will not want to miss.

Those who are thinking about traveling to Hawaii for some fun in the sun can take part in a luau. In fact, there is a Waikiki Starlight Luau over at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. In order to partake in the luau, tickets will have to be bought. Two tickets cost $200 and those of you who are staying in Waikiki on the island of Oahu can save on the cost of these tickets by booking a room at the Embassy Suite Waikiki. Two tickets to the traditional celebration over at the Hilton Hawaiian Village will be given to you if you book a stay at the Embassy Suite Waikiki for seven days or longer.
