subject: Introduction To Elecronic Training Collars [print this page]

An electronic collar emits an electronic charge or vibration on a dog's neck when it misbehaves. The training collars are operated using a remote switch. These electronic training collars are used as part of a training program, it's a valuable asset used to teach a dog how to obey. However you need to be very careful so as not to harm your dog. The collar has a stimulation pack that can be adjusted, you can increase or decrease the level of stimulation, and this is done depending on your dog's sensitivity level.

How to fit an Electronic Training Collar on Your Dog.

Experts suggest that the collar should be adjusted snugly, leaving enough space to easily insert a finger between the dogs neck and the strap.

Always use the collar on clean fur, and remove it when the dog is not in active training. Make sure your dog doesn't wear the collar for more than 8 hours at a time. If the collar is on the dog's neck for a very long time or if it's too tight, the dog may get sores or rashes.

Remove any other collar before you fit the dog with the E-collar. This is because dog tags and metal clasps may affect the efficiency of the receiver.

How to use electronic training collars:

* The first step is to determine the most appropriate stimulation level for the dog. Begin with the lowest and gradually increase the level until your dog reacts. Remember you only want the dog to react but not physically jump from jolt. You will see the reaction when your dog starts to look around to determine where it came from.

* Take the dog for a walk; here you will watch for the behavior you want to correct. If he does something you don't like, depress the button, this will send an electronic stimulation. During this time, also give a command like, 'sit', 'stop' and then pull back on the leash.

Start with a low stimulation level, and then slightly increase if the dog doesn't respond. There are dogs that will respond to a very low stimulation while others may tolerate a strong shock.

* Keep in mind that you have to send the stimulation immediately when you see your dog misbehave. If you wait too long, the dog won't understand the reason behind it.

* As you continue the training sessions you will use the stimulation of the collar less and less as your dog responses properly to just your voice commands.

Advantages of Electronic Training Collars.

* Fast and Easy:

Use of these collars decreases the time you take to train a dog using the traditional methods. The devices are also easy to use. All you have to do is follow the simple instructions on the package. The collar is operated using a remote, so you can comfortably control your dog from a distance.

* Inexpensive:

These collars are cheaper compared to enrolling a dog in obedience schools that can last up to 6 weeks to end. Hiring a private trainer is even more expensive so it's wise that you use an E-collar to train your dog.
