The art of ivory is considered one of the aesthetic productions in India. This is a comprehensive treatise containing historical narratives on the development of the art of ivory. It contains many copious illustrations of the carvings produced.
Commencing with a study of the pre- and proto-historic periods where the art is concerned, the book traces the growth of the art through the art-epochs in a chronological sequence down to modern times. It discusses the growth of the art in India and outside, especially in China, Japan, Thailand in the East and South-east of Asia, centres in the Middle East and the West particularly France and the USA. Taking up the development of the art in these places by focusing on aspects like variations in styles and across regions, it studies the technical development of the art. It delves into the appearance of the fret-work, veneering, polychromy and gliding and miniature paintings on the plain surface of caskets and other items which speak volumes on the advancement in workmanship.
The author Prof. A. K. Bhattacharya is noted for his research publications on Indian and trans-Indian art for more than five decades now. He was associated with prestigious museums in the country, being the Director of the Indian Museum, Calcutta for more than a decade.
