subject: Add Innovation To Your Skylights [print this page]

Skylights are a creative way to introduce some natural light into your home and save electric energy at the same time. Various types of skylights can be incorporated into the different parts of your home. For instance, skylights with vents are suitable for areas that also require continuous circulation of fresh air in addition to natural light like kitchen and bathrooms. An overhead installed ventilating skylight aids a proper movement of air through the roof. These can be manually operated, motorized or remote controlled. The most innovative ventilating skylights can be the ones with a temperature sensor that open and close with the change in the room temperature.

Options in fixed skylights

Even if you need simple fixed skylights, you have a number of options in them to select from. You can have plain rectangular, square, round, elliptical, convex or dome skylights. These are suitable to be placed in the areas where only natural light is required and a regular adjustment of them is not needed. If you want a soothing scattered light rather than the harsh sunlight, you can replace the plain transparent glass of the skylight with an acrylic or embossed glass. You can also opt for a skylight with a sheet of plastic in place of glass. Though, plastic skylights face a problem of making too much noise due to expansion and contraction during change of temperature or during raining.

Tubular skylights for smaller areas

If you have a space constraint while choosing a skylight, you can go for a tubular skylight. These are generally smaller in size but due to a special type of lens used in them in place of glass, these can direct a good amount of natural light into the room. This lens also filters out the harmful UV radiations from the sunlight. These can be easily placed in smaller areas like corridor, bathrooms and even cabinets. Tubular skylights can also be incorporated with a tunnel of reflective glass that can direct the light to a particular area.

Dramatic dome shaped skylights

To add a more dramatic look to a particular area of your home like the hall or the staircase, you can install designer or plain colored glass skylights over the area. During daytime, these skylights will modify the natural light according to their design. Even at night, these will render a beautiful appearance to the area. Dome skylights give a spectacular look to the room. These also come in various designs with hues of different colors like bronze, smoked, antique stained glass, etc.

Whichever types of skylights you get to ornate your home, you must make sure that you get them from a trusted brand. Inferior quality skylights may have problems like leaking and breaking. A leaking skylight may spoil your furniture and interiors too. While installing skylights in your bedroom, consider adjustable lights as you may need to cover the opening to block the moonlight that might prevent you from sleeping.
