subject: Operations With Whole Numbers And Fractions [print this page]

In this article whole number are starting with 0, the whole number is in the form of {0,1,2,3,4,}. The fraction contain numerator and denominator, the fraction consist of three types they are proper fraction, improper fraction and mi*ed fraction. The numerator is less than denominator called proper fraction. The numerator is greater than denominator called improper fraction. Natural number with fraction called mi*ed fraction.Using this fractions and whole numbers in the operations of multiplying, adding and subtraction is called operations with whole numbers and fraction.

Fraction:

A part of the whole thing is fraction. Fractions can be classified as proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed fractions. The value of the numerator and denominator represents the different form of fractions.

Mixed Numbers:

Mixed number is nothing but the mixed fraction. All mixed numbers have a whole number and a proper fractional part.

Arithmetic operations can be performed with decimals fractions and mixed numbers. Similarly conversions can also be done with decimals fractions and mixed numbers.

Example: operations with whole numbers and fractions

4+'2/3' , 4-'2/3' and 4*'2/3' these are the operation of addition subtraction and multiplication operation with whole numbers and fractions. Here fraction is '2/3.'

Problems in Addition Operations with Whole Numbers and Fractions

Simplify the Addition operations with whole numbers and fractions.

Problem (i) 4+'5/4'

Solution: simplify by using the Least Common Multiplier method

4+'5/4'

4+'5/4' here 4 is whole number and '5/4' is the fraction

4+ '5/4' Here the LCM for this function 4 and 1 is 4

'((4*4)+(5*1))/4' using the cross multiplication

'(16+5)/4'

'21/4.'

5.25 is answer for addition operations with whole numbers and fractions

Problem (ii) 5+'5/6'

Solution: simplify by using the Least Common Multiplier method

5+'5/6'

5+'5/6' here 4 is whole number and '5/6' is the fraction

5+' 5/6' Here the LCM for this function 6 and 1 is 6

'((5*6)+(5*1))/6' using cross multiplication

'(30+5)/4'

'35/4.'

8.75 is answer for addition operations with whole numbers and fractions.

Problems in Multiplication and Subtraction Operations with Whole Numbers and Fractions

Simplify the multiplication operations with whole numbers and fractions.

Problem (i) 4*'5/4'

Solution: simplify by using multiplication operation

4*'5/4'

4*'5/4' here 4 is whole number and '5/4' is the fraction

4*' 5/4'

= '(4*5)/4'

='20/4'

=5 here dividing 4 on both numerator and denominator

=5 is answer for multiplication operations with whole numbers and fractions

Problem (i) 6*'5/4'

Solution: simplify by using multiplication operation

6*'5/4'

6*'5/4' here 6 is whole number and '5/4' is the fraction

6* '5/4'

= '(6*5)/4'

='30/4'

=7.5 here dividing 4 on both numerator and denominator

7.5 is answer for multiplication operations with whole numbers and fractions

Simplify the subtraction operations with whole numbers and fractions.

Problem (iii) 6-'5/4'

Solution: simplify by using the Least Common Multiplier method

6-'5/4'

6-'5/4' here 4 is whole number and '5/4' is the fraction

6- '5/4' Here the LCM for this function 4 and 1 is 4

'((6*4)-(5*1))/4' using the cross multiplication

'(24-5)/4'

'19/4.'

4.75 is answer for subtraction operations with whole number and fractions.
