Hotel star ratings are systems is a system that will rank hotels according to the quality of that hotel. They are used as a guideline for prospective guests and many people use these rankings specifically to decide on whether or not they will book that particular hotel. In Europe, the ranking is from one to four stars, with four being the best rating, and in the US, it is from one to five, and sometimes half stars are used.

A star rating usually indicates the quality of the hotel. So the ratings will take into consider the hotels class, economy, value, and quality. Hotel start ratings can be very beneficial and informative about the hotel. A four or five star hotel is going to be the highest of class, and your one to two star hotels will be more value then anything else.

Here is a breakdown of the particular ratings:

5-Star Rating: An affluent hotel, offering the best in service. Very elegant and beautiful, with high quality linens, many in room services, multiple eateries on site, room service and even gourmet menus. Almost always a fitness center, concierge serve and valet parking. This will be the highest in cost, as well.

4-Star Rating: These are large and formal hotels, with high-quality service. Often these are all clustered together nearby, as well as shopping services, entertainment and dining options. Nicely furnished rooms and a concierge, as well as pools and fitness centers, are some services you can expect at a 4-Star hotel.

3-Star Rating: Almost always located near an interstate, business areas or shopping centers. Nice rooms that are spacious, and nice decorative lobby areas. Some may have on-site restaurants and will offer breakfast. A small fitness center and a pool are sometimes available for use.

2-Star Rating: Usually a chin hotel, that offer quality and small amenities. Medium or small rooms with a TV and phone. Sometimes there are restaurants on site but usually not much more to offer.

1-Star Rating: Small hotel or motel usually managed by owner. Basic accommodations at best. Sometimes near public transportation and interstates and a reasonably priced hotel.

Remember too that hotels are given their star ratings by a variety of groups such as AAA or travel websites and may differ from time to time. Each entity has it's own way of establishing the star rate. And also in some foreign countries, hotels may very well be rated by independent companies of even the government, so you need to keep that in mind because those ratings can vary significantly.
