subject: How To Maintain Your Engagement Ring. [print this page]

Your Engagement Ring will be your most prized possession and you should take utmost care to make sure that the sparkle of your ring is not lost. Diamonds are considered to be one of the toughest gems but it's noteworthy that if it is not taken care of properly, it may chip off and many a times loose its original color and shine.

You must make sure that your ring doesn't come in contact with harsh chemicals and detergents. It is preferable that you keep your ring aside while you clean and dust your house.

If your ring has accumulated a lot of dust then it is best that you soak it in a lukewarm solution of soap solution and water for a while. After it has soaked for about 5 mins, (if your ring has a cake layer then soak it for about 30 mins) then you can brush it lightly using an eyebrow brush. Once you have brushed your ring, you need to rinse it thoroughly with running water to remove all the traces of the soap solution. You should do this by placing your ring in a strainer and then passing water through it. If you do carry out this process by placing your ring on your finger, there is a possibility you will be searching the drain soon enough.

Once you have rinsed your ring, dab it gently with a lint free jewelers cloth. While storing your diamond jewelry, make sure you compartmentalize your jewelry because diamonds can easily scratch other diamonds and metals.

Always make sure you don't let your ring come in contact with bleach and it is advisable that while doing physical work, you should remove your ring and place it safely.

Another tip is that you should give your ring to the jeweler once a year to check whether any of the prongs or mounting needs repairs. This will ensure that you don't lose your diamond because it came off.

Your engagement ring is one of your proudest possessions and it is essential to keep it brilliant and sparkling. The preferred cleaning method is up to you but between cleanings try not to touch the diamond with your fingers. This will help maintain its dazzling shine and brilliance for longer periods between cleaning.
