University is a competitive environment and a number of students fail to last the first term. Survival at university becomes difficult more many students and whilst their attempts at survival are ok, many individuals face a number of problems.

1. Balance your life - the most challenging problem that many students face is balancing different activities in their new lifestyle. As a student, you will need to balance your studies, sports, resting and eating. Most students will commonly forget to eat and others will not realise that they were expected at football practice 3 hours ago. Not having a balance of all of these things will cause you to act sluggish and not give each of the different tasks your full attention - you should always make sure you have relaxation time.

2. Attitude - having a positive at college will allow you to put more energy into the different tasks that you are doing, whether these be academic activities or during sports. When you haven't completed something that well you should look on it as a learning experience and put it behind you - this will allow you to move on and accomplish other things. You should also believe in having a positive attitude towards making friends, as these friendships will help you get through the tough times.

3. Adjust to your surroundings - you should take your time to understand your new environment and surroundings, but don't take too long though. You will want to integrate into the college or university culture and these tend to differ from institution to institution. Knowing your general surrounding environment will mean that you will have more knowledge of what is going on around you.

4. Dealing with personal issues - most of the time things don't go as expected, so it is better to solve any personal issues that arise. You can do the following things: a. Consult your supervisor. b. Consult your doctor. c. Get the issue resolved by sharing it with a friend.

5. Know the system - you should ensure that you have adequate knowledge of the different rules and regulations that the academic institution has. You should make sure that you are aware of the different procedures that have been put in place to govern submissions of academic work, GPA requirements and appeals procedures.

6. Time management - you should make a timetable or schedule to make sure that you manage your time as much as possible. Making sure you have enough time for studying will be important, but making sure you have adequate time for drinking and socializing is a must. Setting yourself goals in the future is a clear indication that you see yourself going somewhere, which will aid to your success.

7. Define your goals - having clear goals that define your purpose at university should be a task undertaken by every college student. You want to establish what you want to achieve by studying your degree in an academic institution. You will want to ask yourself a couple of questions: Where do I want to be in 5 years from now? How am I going to get there? What other things do I need to get there? These questions that you answer will help you establish a clear set of objectives that you can use to define your goals.

Concurring these few tips will mean that your time spent at university or college is going to be special and memorable.
